This sketch was done as part of the Inktober 2018 Challenge using the prompt ‘Stretch’. It got me thinking about this poem I wrote back in the 70’s when I was in my mid-30’s and striving to find ways grow more, see more and be more. Now I’m in my mid-70’s and thinking to myself “Wouldn’t it be great to publish a children’s book using my poem and sketches of this little giraffe! 🙂 You’re never too old to set goals and dream dreams! “I wish you JOY, giraffe!”

~ Stretching to New Heights ~
What is it about each of us
that we are always exploring?
Stretching to new heights?
A hunger to be set above
the rest ~ to be special.
It amuses me that even
the tall, lanky giraffe
(head towering above most trees)
still seeks the new juicy leaves
on treetops high out of reach.
You’d think she would be proud
~ this long-necked gal!
Content with the height
she was given!
But No!
Just like each of us,
she wants to grow MORE!
See more! Be more!
Experience all
that this life can offer!
And my thoughts for her are;
“I wish you JOY, giraffe!”

(This is just a fun post with a poem I wrote back in 1979 when I returned back to school to take some college courses and begin to move forward to improve my life in positive ways.) ❤
Oh Mary Lou … I adore the painting! And I like the poem too 🙂 I would highly encourage to follow that dream of writing a children’s book. Your work would appeal to children and parents alike.

This is lovely! I think you should create a children’s book of poetry. And how neat is it that you have a poem you write from so long ago.

Hi Mary Lou, giraffes are one of my favourite animals and I long to be taller than my 5’2″. I constantly strive to grow and learn and hope that will continue in 2019 and beyond. I think you should definitely publish a children’s book. Go for it because we are never too old to make our dreams a reality, Mary Lou. Thank you for sharing and being part of our #MLSTL group and have a lovely week. xx

How fun! Absolutely write the book. We’re only too old to do something when we decide we are.

Lovely! And I hope you sit down and write that book. You’ll never regret writing it, but you may regret it someday if you don’t!

Really nice! Human beings need to be always growing…emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. That is symbolized so beautifully in this post…we want to experience all that this life can offer…and that requires that we stretch and grow…constantly! Love it.

Thank you for your encouragement! It would be great if we could teach our children this from the start, right? 🙂

I loved this Mary Lou – it really speaks to how I’m feeling atm – I’m tall so I identify with that giraffe, but I also want to reach higher and be more! 2019 is my year for stretching!
MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM 🙂
