United Nations Mine Awareness Day

“Creating a world free from deadly weapons is an important objective for the United Nations. Together with government and civil society groups, it created the Mine Ban Treaty in 1997, which prohibits the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and provides for their destruction.

Signed by over 160 countries, the Treaty has brought about a dramatic reduction in the use of landmines. But there is still a long way to go. Mines are still present in over 60 countries, threatening the lives of millions of people and preventing the land they contaminate from being used, for agriculture and housing, for example.

For this reason, the UN declared that 4 April should be observed each year as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. The Day serves to raise awareness of the ongoing threat posed by mines, call on those states that have not yet signed the Treaty to do so, and mobilise resources to help the countries affected.”

This past November 2018 I took part in the Nibvember 2018 Challenge.  Day 27 prompt was Lettering and I came up with the design below.  It’s easy to see where my inspiration came from as I’d participated in the A to Z Challenge Lessons Learned in 2016. So, feeling the call to try once again for A To Z Challenge 2019, I decided to sign up for this years using this design as my inspiration.

Safety Pin Day

“April 10 is Safety Pin Day (also known as International Safety Pin Day), an informal observance dedicated to a simple yet ingenious invention. We are sure that practically everyone has used a safety pin at least once in their life.

A safety pin, also referred to as a baby pin, is a variation of the regular pin. Its main difference from the regular pin is that it includes a simple spring mechanism and a clasp. The clasp covers the sharp point of the pin and keeps it from opening. It simultaneously holds the pin in place and protects its user from being pricked by the sharp point.

The modern safety pin was invented by American mechanic Walter Hunt. He invented it in order to pay a $15 dollar debt to his friend. On April 10, 1849, Hunt received a US patent for his invention. The anniversary of the day when the patent was issued is informally celebrated as Safety Pin Day. Hunt sold his patent to W. R. Grace and Company, earning $400 (approximately $10,000 in 2008 dollars).”

The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world.[1] A number of records are pressed specifically for Record Store Day, with a list of releases for each country, and are only distributed to shops participating in the event. The event began in the United States and remains headquartered there. The Queen’s Actual Birthday ~ April 21st

(Click on link for more information)

Queen

“The Queen celebrates two birthdays each year: her actual birthday on 21 April and her official birthday on (usually) the second Saturday in June.”

“Official celebrations to mark the Sovereigns’ birthday have often been held on a day other than the actual birthday, particularly when the actual birthday has not been in the summer. King Edward VII, for example, was born on 9 November, but his official birthday was marked throughout his reign in May or June when there was a greater likelihood of good weather for the Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour.

The Queen usually spends her actual birthday privately, but the occasion is marked publicly by gun salutes in central London at midday: a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London. In 2006, Her Majesty celebrated her 80th Birthday in 2006 with a walkabout in the streets outside of Windsor Castle to meet well-wishers.”
